Lamar Valley

With an approximately 40 mile drive east of Mammoth, Wyoming near the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park Lamar Valley should be on every park visitor’s to-do list. Expect the trip from Mammoth to the road closure near Cooke City, Montana and back to take about 5-6 hours. The road is twisty, the weather will change quickly and often and you will encounter wildlife and park visitors all of the time. Look for groupings of visitors with scopes or cameras as they generally have located wildlife of some kind. The day that I spent in the valley I encountered numerous groups like this but most all were viewing bison herds. One group claimed to have found wolves but I, for the life of me, could not see them. Maybe next time.
